Accessible Family Garden · Surbiton
Langley Avenue, Surbiton
Surbiton
A generous Surbiton garden designed for wheelchair access, sensory stimulation and family use.
The Brief
A family garden that works for everyone.
The brief was to create a garden for a family whose needs included wheelchair access to all areas and sensory enjoyment for a young son with learning and physical difficulties.
Design Thinking
Hand drawn before it is built.
Every project begins by hand, with drawings that explore how the garden should move, settle and feel before anything is built. The plan considers the house, the light, the views from inside and the quiet details that make a space feel personal rather than standard.
These early sketches shape the planting, materials, levels and moments of pause. They give the team a clear design language to build from, so the finished garden feels considered from the first line on paper to the final planting.
The Project
Routes, shade and sensory moments.
Meandering paths move through lawns and planting, with sights, smells, sounds and touch considered throughout. A gazebo gives shade and a destination for outdoor eating.
Design Response
Accessible planting and safe play.
Raised sleeper beds bring planting to wheelchair height, while a sunken trampoline creates safe play at lawn level for the whole family.
